If you’ve watched The Apprentice this week- BBC1 , Wednesday 23rd October, 9pm- you would have seen how the public view the ‘new’ industry of electric bikes.

The eBike/ electric bike/ electric vehicle market is a blend of the good old fashioned pedal bike and new technology. Customers that have never been regular bike riders or are lapsed bikers are keen to find out what the fuss is all about.

Basically, the sensation of riding an eBike is having an extra ‘push’ to help you get up to speed and get further while pedaling. Those who have already experienced electric bikes never turn back- you can go further and enjoy longer periods cycling. It really is the next phase in travel, especially for those who commute – no need to change from lyrca into business clothes! It also would appeal to those who own camper vans and people who want to experience the outdoors but don’t feel ready to hit the trails for hours.

It’s always hard to launch a new product, never mind a new way to travel. But if you look at it from the viewpoint of those who feel excluded from cycling due to fitness or health levels, it is a game changer. Not everyone wants to hit uphill tracks and can devote weekends to cycling.

Therefore I feel it is time to look at the electric bike industry as a method of transport, not an alternative for cyclists. We need to find ways to travel that don’t cost the earth and that really do have an environmental upside. A rechargeable, easily accessible way to get from A to B is how the eBike should be seen, and promoted.
